New Year’s Day

New Year’s Race for the Chili!

Monday, January 1st , 2018
Point San Pablo Yacht Club

The MMBA will be continuing the time-honored tradition of the New Year’s Day race, chili potluck, and tacky trophy awards on Monday, January 1st, 2018 at the Point San Pablo Yacht Club. As in years past, an informal race will start off Clipper Cove at 11:00 am. The course will be from the port or starboard side of “committee boat” and sail to the finish at Pt. San Pablo YC’s dock. To practice my role on the regatta committee this year, KISMET will serve as the committee boat for this NY’s Day “race” and will follow up the rear (to take up the coveted and repeat position of DFL boat).
It’s a good time to begin the year by hanging out the sails and hanging out with friends. Boats are encouraged to join at any time after 11:00 and the only goal is to arrive at Pt. San Pablo YC by 2:00 pm for the tacky trophy exchange and some good food and adult beverages. Tacky trophies are a god way to re-gift any white elephant gifts you may have received from well-meaning relatives or friends. The boat finishing DFL gives a trophy to the boat that finished ahead of it and that boat gives a trophy to the next finisher and so on until the “winner” gets his/hers. The last boat to finish gets the grand prize trophy, from the first place winner. Some real treasures have surfaced over the years and like a bad penny they keep coming back.
All asphalt cruisers are welcome to come earlier around noon to warm up the kitchen and bar.
New Year’s Day is as good as any to renew your 2018 memberships and make the membership chairman’s job of nagging you to do so less cumbersome in the next few months. It also ensures that you will not be dropped from our Shellback mailing list. So bring your renewal check and/or cash with your renewal form on NY’s Day, and introduce yourself to our new membership chair, Liz Diaz.
We used to alternate Gaffs or Marconis to bring entrée type dishes but since Marconis outnumber Gaffs this will be a “free for all” potluck with no dish assignments. So bring enough for you, your crew, and some extra to share.
